Designed for supersonic speeds, the vehicle can be used in a number of different scenarios. San Diego, California-based Kratos Defense has unveiled a concept image of its newest drone, the Thanatos. The presentation was held as part of the report on the company's financial results and future forecasts. "Thanatos", named after the ancient Greek deity of death, has been known since 2019, but until recently, details about it remained inaccessible to the general public. The newest drone is a flying device without a tail with a shovel-shaped nose, and edges resembling a platypus. This design is generally typical for stealth technologies. The distinctive features of the Thanatos are deep keel lines and deepened air intakes, which contributes to less visibility on radar, and a hidden tail allows you to avoid detection by infrared means. The diamond-shaped wings provide reduced drag at supersonic speeds. Without disclosing detailed information about the device, the company makes it clear that the Thanatos can be used as an escort for manned fighters under the NGAD and CCA programs. In this role, the Thanatos is likely to serve as an "armament truck" carrying air-to-air missiles for fighter jets, various electronic warfare equipment, or even operate independently. Drone projects like the Thanatos can be proposed by the US Navy to coordinate with other branches of the armed forces, especially when it comes to transferring control during operations. Work on the drones is expected to begin by 2025, which is consistent with Kratos ' financial projections.
