SiegedSec claims a leak of critical information.

On Sunday, the hacker group SiegedSec, known for its politically motivated attacks, announced on Telegram that it had hacked the Idaho National Laboratory's personnel management app. The Group claims to have received detailed information about the employees of this nuclear research laboratory.

Hackers claimed to have gained access to detailed data of lab employees, including full names, social security numbers, banking information and addresses. The group published some of the stolen data, but it was not possible to confirm the claim that the entire array was stolen.

Lab spokeswoman Laurie McNamara confirmed the hacking, but said the scale of the incident is still being determined.

Although the hackers did not explain why they chose this particular lab, the leak poses a serious threat to US national security. Scientists at Idaho National Laboratory are working on the country's most secret defense projects, including protecting critical infrastructure. Attackers access to personal data of employees opens up opportunities for penetration into the laboratory of foreign intelligence services.

Among the published files, there is a detailed list of recent layoffs and the reasons for them. Other documents contain more than 6000 current social insurance numbers. As of October 2022, the laboratory employed about 5,500 people.

Another file contains more than 58,000 lines of data about current, dismissed, and former employees. Some of the information in the stolen files is dated October 31, 2023.

The lab contacted the FBI and the Cybersecurity Agency to investigate the incident. Oracle and the FBI declined to comment.

The Idaho National Laboratory is part of 17 research centers of the US Department of Energy. She specializes in nuclear power, energy security, and other national security issues, including cyber defense.

It remains unclear how SiegedSec penetrated the HR management app and how the group managed to extract such a large amount of data from various personal information.

Oracle describes the HR product that was attacked as "a complete cloud-based solution that connects every human resource management process - and every person - in your enterprise."

This is not the first time that US national laboratories have been targeted by hackers. US national laboratories work on everything from nuclear weapons to renewable technologies - and everything in between-and have been the target of several state-backed hacking operations. Earlier this year, hackers attacked Brookhaven, Argonne and Lawrence Livermore labs.

SiegedSec, the group that claimed responsibility for the hack, has a history of conducting politically motivated cyberattacks, including claims of hacking into NATO systems. The group last attacked NATO in October, claiming to have stolen about 3,000 documents.

The group has previously stated that they are less interested in hacktivist attacks and consider themselves "more likely to engage in illegal activities than activism." They carried out attacks against US states that restrict access to medical care for gender reassignment and abortion. The group recently claimed an attack on Israel's infrastructure
