Weapons give protesters a chance to make mistakes at rallies.

Firearms manufacturer FN Herstal has introduced a new model designed to reduce the number of accidental kills during civil clashes. The device, in addition to firing non-lethal elastomeric projectiles, is equipped with a digital intelligent sight that can recognize a person's head and block shooting in its direction.

Fighting riots requires a special approach to the choice of weapons. Unlike firearms used to neutralize threats, riot control weapons are designed to restore control of the situation, but they should not cause serious damage.

FN Herstal Smart ProtectoR-303T

The FN Herstal Smart ProtectoR-303T model will be officially presented at the MILIPOL Paris 2023 trade fair. The weapon fires 12.55 mm FN SP elastomer rounds at a distance of 5 to 25 m using compressed air.

The weapon is intended for use by law enforcement agencies in crowd control, riot suppression, daily patrols and ensuring security at mass events.

The main innovation is an electro-optical sight with a camera and software that determines in real time whether the barrel of a weapon is aimed at a human head. In this case, the system issues a visual and audible warning and blocks the trigger mechanism.

The camera also records images during the shooting, which can be used for analysis or in court. With the help of a dedicated app and projector, the scope can be used for training before completing a task. The battery provides 5 to 12 hours of battery life, and the device is equipped with an automatic sleep mode. It is also possible to connect an external battery or data drive via USB-C.
